Espelette peppers are a variety of chilli pepper that is grown in the old basque country of France. It has an amazing sweet warm flavour and not generally considered hot (only 4000 on the scoville scale).
Being harvested now you will see festoons of the Espelette peppers hung on balconies and houses all over the regions. There is even an annual pepper festival every October which attracts over 20,000 tourists every year!
A cornerstone of basque cuisine, the Espelette peppers have actually replaced black pepper as a main ingredient in many traditional Basque dishes.
We have a few of these amazing festoons available at the Stratford upon Avon Food Festival this weekend so why not pop along and see what you think?
