What is Coarse Sea Salt?

A lot of recipes use high quality salt these days. Coarse sea salt has a much larger grain to it than common table salt, which is the reason behind the name “coarse”. Coarse sea salt is so popular because of it’s dramatic impact when it comes to flavouring. Each grain of salt is fairly large, so you notice it immediately on your tongue when you taste something, which gives the impression that something is saltier or better seasoned than something lacking coarse salt. Coarse salt is great for finishing off a wide variety of dishes, which ranged from salted caramels and other sweet desserts, to good pieces of bread and steak. A small sprinkle of this high quality salt goes a long away, and coarse sea salt is becoming more popular with people who want to reduce their salt intake simply because they feel they can use less.

What is Grey Sea Salt?

Grey Sea Salt is an organic salt from the coastal area of Guérande, Brittany, France. The salt is moist and unrefined and remains a light grey, almost light purple colour because of the clay from the salt flats where it is collected. The salt is collected by hand using traditional Celtic methods and is available in coarse or stoneground fine grain. It’s considered by many to be the best quality fine sea salt available. This high quality salt has really gained fame in the culinary world in the last few years.

What is Fleur de Sel?

Fleur de Sel is the premier finishing salt. It is harvested from the top of salt ponds using traditional Celtic methods. This artisan sea salt is comprised of crystals that form naturally on the surface of salt evaporation ponds in the Guérande region of France. The salt crystals are carefully raked using only wooden tools. Just as the cream rises to the top, so does the best Fleur de Sel. This high quality salt is called the “caviar of salts” by chefs worldwide, and also similar to fine wine regions, different areas within the Guérande region produce salts that have their own unique flavours. Fleur de Sel is ideal for salads, cooked fresh vegetables and grilled meats.

What is Smoked Salt?

Smoked Salt is quite a fine salt, and packs a real smokey flavour. The salts that are smoked naturally in cold smokers are slow-smoked over real wood fires to infuse the salt crystals with 100% natural smoke flavour. Smoked sea salts add a unique flavour to a wide range of dishes including roasts, chicken, salads and sandwiches. Unlike artificially infused smoke flavoured salts, all of Vanilla Chef’s smoked sea salts are created using natural smoking methods! The great thing about this smoked salt is that, should you wish to impart a smoked flavour into your dish, it can be easily achieved by adding the Smoked Salt which is a great time saving shortcut.
